Raw
Gallagher are a Rory Gallagher tribute band playing
only his music, the blues, rock, slide and acoustic,
from the early days of Taste, through to the 70’s
and 80’s, up to his final work..
Current members are Phil Vincent on drums, Steve Norton
on Bass guitar, and Steve White on guitar and vocals.
Raw Gallagher started in October 2000 playing locally
in South Yorkshire.
Four years on they’re performing
at recognised venues the length and breadth of the UK,
from Aberdeen to Southampton, Newcastle to Cardiff,
often in London, and touring in Scotland and Ireland,
with enquiries from Europe in the offing. Sincerest
thanks must be given to Richard Oxby, Peter Brown, Peter
Feenstra, Chris Simmonds, Steve Lally, ‘Blues
Matters’ magazine and many others for their help
along the way; not forgetting the fans, of course. |
Raw
Gallagher came about by accident in more ways than one.
In 1998, Steve’s brother, a well known blues guitarist
with the band ‘Mulesweat’, was killed in
a car accident. Some time later, a memorial concert
was held in which Mulesweat invited anyone who had known
him to join them on stage. Steve and his good friend
Ron Villiers (Bass), at this point, had not touched
a guitar in 20 years. They were ‘press-ganged’
into learning ‘Little Wing’ and ‘Crossroads’
on borrowed guitars just for the night; were immediately
hooked, and haven’t put their guitars down since!

Two thirds of the band were now together practising
at home - Cream, Hendrix, the usual stuff, plus a
bit of Rory - Messin’ with the Kid and Tattoo’d
Lady.
There was no need for a drummer yet, there was so
much rust to scrape off. For some reason the Gallagher
songs kept coming and coming. There was no conscious
decision to go that way at all, not at this stage,
the songs just seemed to come naturally. They didn’t
know that there was a big tribute scene going on,
being out of touch for so long - Abba, Queen and the
Beatles everyone knew about. Then they thought - why
not Rory?

After
trying out several drummers, none of them working out,
John Maloney came along after just finishing a six year
stint with blues group ‘The Loose Haloes’,
ready for a fresh challenge, and mad keen on Rory Gallagher
- essential!
Steve and Ron were getting tired of talking to drummers
linking the Gallagher name with Oasis. John fitted in
like it was meant to be and proper rehearsing started.
(He bought us drinks after the first practice - this
swung it for him!). |
Since
then, Raw Gallagher have gone from strength to strength,
playing all over the UK and always keen to add new Rory
material to their repertoire. After a successful period
with the band both John and Ron decided to call it a
day and pursue other interests.
Steve White then recruited an experienced drummer
and bass player in Phil Vincent and Steve Norton. The
band continues to go from strength to strength, gaining
new friends and admirers wherever they play.
